This place was revamped a few years ago now and they have done a truly spendid job. I'm sure most of you have been there but it still warrants a place in bars i like, because i do indeed like it. It's got a very plush, rich and quirky decor. Done in a bizarre dark style, it features a large fake giraffes head on the wall, that looks like Harold from the life be in it van of my childhood and many other fun features like a giant ostridge.

It has a very good balcony which is where i end up spending most to my time here. The balcony is large enough to hold about fifty people and has lots of seating and standing room. This place does get very busy, as every man and his dog knows about it, but it's still a very good weekend destination.
They have a full kitchen and a separate dining area at the back as well if you're feeling like some sustenance to keep the night going. You'll need to be careful of the dress code and security though and that's my only real complaint of this place. It's one of the only bars in Melbourne that has knocked me back because i wasn't with a girl. They also don't like suits or t-shirts with big logos on them. Honestly this is the sort of place i won't try get into after 11pm because the security are just too strict, they know they have a hot bar and can be selective. If you're a guy alone and they ask what you're here for make sure you say something like "allisons birthday drinks" they won't like that you're just going for a few quiet ones.

The people you'll find here are a good cross section and the balcony area is always a good place to have chat with a beautiful stranger, or cool group of travelers. Give this place a look for the decor alone.
The best thing i can say for the Carlton is that it's very reliable. I've had a dozen night here and i always have a great time.

Sadly not named after Carlton Banks
