House of Maximon is in my top three of Melbourne Bar right now. The decor is fantastic with lots of atmosphere and a great Mexican Day of the dead/pop art theme. It's dark and interesting and i like the staff as well. It's in the same Building as Berlin bar which is one flight up and Brutale, which is the old Euro trash and now a Baltic style eatery.
Good nights here are Wednesday when they have a $5 buck comedy night run by a team called "Crab Lab" at 8:30 i've seen about three shows from them and it's been pretty high quality for the low price, they also do $6 tiger pints on the night.
They are normal open til around 1pm and have a good crowd on Friday and Saturdays. It starts as a bar vibe but people get on the floor as well. They normally play some pretty good music, old school hip hop or rock. Good selection of tequila and they actually know about the different types and tastes. Other features are free popcorn and a very very good smoking area which is inside.
This is one of those place i love taking friends to for the wow factor, plus it's up an lane way off china town, then up some un-marked stairs, so it's Melbourne all over. Also good security team and another great bar next door called FAD Gallery if you feel like a mini bar crawl.
